SCOTT
A. MAKUAKANE is a lawyer whose practice emphasizes estate
planning and trust law. He is a graduate of Ka`u High School,
Duke University, and the University of Hawaii School of Law.
After completing law school in 1983, Scott joined the estate
planning department of the law firm of Goodsill Anderson Quinn
& Stifel, where he became a partner in 1990. Scott left the
Goodsill firm to join the law firm of Beck & Taylor as a
partner in June of 1994. As of December 1, 1999, Scott
withdrew from Beck & Taylor and established his own firm, The
Law Offices of Scott A. Makuakane. His firm is now known as
Est8Planning Counsel LLLC. Scott chairs the Elder Law Section
of the Hawaii State Bar Association (HSBA), and he is past
chair of both the Probate & Estate Planning Section and the
Estate & Gift Tax Committee of the HSBA. He is also past
corporate secretary of the HSBA and past co-chair of the
Law-Related Education Committee of the HSBA. Scott has written
various training manuals and articles for lawyers concerning
estate planning and has been a lecturer for the Hawaii
Institute for Continuing Legal Education, the National
Business Institute, the National Estate Planning Conference
Center, Professional Education Systems, and the HSBA, as well
as various churches and community groups.
Scott is past president and a director of
the Christian Legal Society of Hawaii. He is also past
president, past chairman of the board, and current board
member of the Financial Planning Association of Hawaii. He is
a member of the Rotary Club of Honolulu and serves as a board
member and corporate secretary of the Foundation of the Rotary
Club of Honolulu. Scott has been awarded the highest rating
(AV) given by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory (this
rating indicates very high to preeminent legal ability and
very high ethical standards as established by confidential
opinions from members of the Bar), has been inducted into the
Outstanding Lawyers of America (an honor that is based on
nominations of peers and is conferred upon no more than 100
practicing lawyers in any one State), and is named in the
National Register’s Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals.
Scott has also been a Certified Financial Planner™ certificant
since 1995, though he does not sell financial products or
services.
